Everyone love the idea of Search Engine Optimization and perhaps spend a lot behind SEO providers on a daily basis just to bring its keyword in the first page of Google result, but there are some simple rules which lead to the proper optimization if followed, unless leads to a poor result in the search engine optimization output.

The basic SEO starts even before installing the WordPress, in the starting of the installation script in the domain. In some hosts, there is an option to install the WordPress in a domain specified by the user, there should be used only http with the domain name like http://yoursite.com but not http://www.yoursite.com, the reason behind this is to avoid canonical URL. This canonical url is the dilemma between these two type of links, one with the www and another without, so if the script is installed then the site will exist in both of them creating problems in the future.

After installing the WordPress it is the time to customize it, there are thousands of plugins and themes available for this content management system, however choosing the best SEO optimized ones are the keys to better result. Thesis is the best flexible theme when WordPress is considered with a huge list of customizing option and in-build SEO facilities, optimizing them will bring in amazing results with minimal offsite SEO work. Plugins are also very difficult to choose from and often chosen according to own choice and taste but there are some basic plugins that should be installed for the Primary SEO purpose. Platinum SEO Pack is one of them which increase the facility of adding SEO metadata into any WordPress post as well as defining their attributes before publishing. Google XML Sitemap is another must have plugin for setting the sitemap of the WordPress site, failing to install this or any similar mapping software will leave the search engine optimization work unfinished for any WordPress site.

Pinging is another important function of any site, proper use of pinging index the posts almost immediately where overuse or misuse may lead to deindexing of the same. Pinging sites can be added in the writing section of the WordPress settings tab, the list of pinging sites is available in sites like Pingler where pinging service available free.

Meta Text and Meta Tag are two very important parts of making the site fully search engine optimized and for showing the web crawlers which is the most important among all the contents in the site, missing any of them leads to poor SEO score in overall basis. These Onsite search engine optimization works are very important for making it ranked higher and closer to the first page result with the keyword optimized for the site, missing these will lead to build the construction without proper SEO base.

As WordPress requires a paid hosting, sometimes you need to install it in a sub domain of the main domain like a diary or blog attached to any domain, in which case it may require redirect to manage for the WordPress site to a new location, some high cost webhosting service providers allow easy one click redirect facility while most of the others who mainly cPanel WHCMS dependant, require manually editing the htaccess file for writing the redirect codes ourselves.

The htaccess file is technically known as distributed configuration file used to manage all the url in the directory it exists, found mostly in the famous Apache web servers and very useful for easy configuration and simple change codes. The codes are normally written in CGI and PHP and can be integrated with all the current content management system like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal etc. but setting the configuration for them is different on each content management software.

It is not at all advisable to edit or modify this htaccess file unless for the redirect reason and even then you should have the knowledge of what you are doing, otherwise wrong modification of this file will lead into website unavailability and other critical errors. The file .htaccess resides in the root folder of the directory and if you have installed WordPress manually or read previous tutorials here you will know that it requires to change the .htaccess.txt file into .htaccess file after it has been uploaded during installing WordPress in the site via ftp. The reason for not editing it before uploading is that it detects the directory in which it is installed which is not possible before installation. So for a complete understanding and redirect codes on htaccess file, let us have a look on the content of the basic file that WordPress provides.

# BEGIN WordPress

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>

RewriteEngine On

RewriteBase /

RewriteRule ^index\.php$ – [L]

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d

RewriteRule . /index.php [L]

RewriteRule ^(.?)$ http://www.yoursite.com/$1 [R=301,L]

</IfModule>

# END WordPress

This lines of code tell the host to use the file for managing url, we will go line by line for understanding file here. First line indicates the WordPress as a site building software, as provided in the file. The mod_rewrite.c allows the WordPress software to rewrite the url on its own purpose which is very important for canonical urls and SEO purpose. The next two lines enable the rewrite program and take the base url from the root directory. Next few lines are used for setting up the main index url of the site as per WordPress compliances and then the code ends.

For redirecting this site to another, you need to add the following code just before the module ends with </IfModule> Syntax.

RewriteRule ^(.?)$ http://www.toberedirectingto.com/$1 [R=301,L]

The above line adds a 301 permanent redirect rule in the htaccess file and redirects the whole site immediately to another site, for example toberedirectingto.com here in the example when any user browse the main site or any link of the site.

It may sound very difficult and skilled work to make a theme in WordPress but we will guide you’re here to just modify any existing design to replace files and give that theme a whole new outlook, almost same as a new one. There are not much knowledge required to follow through this tutorial, and you will find it rather easy to use the source files to get what you want, according to own choice and taste. There is one famous proverb in the Economy that we should try to use resourced available around us to produce best result, and that’s what we will learn here to do exactly.

To make a theme, it is required to design a structure in the Adobe Photoshop and make a psd file, then use that fie to integrate some xml and php codes to give it a look and feel of a theme, but as we are making this for the people who didn’t do before, we are skipping those parts and using an already existing theme to just edit the files and make a theme. Apart from the free and Premium themes found from Google, WordPress provides a good database of theme collection which are distributed under Creative Common License to edit and use legally, we will use such a theme for the time being.

Some of you already faced a problem while installing any downloaded theme that it says broken header or similar error, the reason is that downloaded file contains many files more than just the theme, like instruction file, license file, and layered psd file to change it as per requirement for the advanced users. In this case, the original theme file is located under any directory called the theme or just the theme name. Among the theme directory, there are minimum two sub folders which are must for any theme, called images and js, as the name indicated two of them contain all the related pictures and JavaScript files accordingly. There may be many others like include, license, thumbs which are extra options for a theme, but here we will work with the images folder mainly.

The images folder holds all the designs, logos, and other pictures which all together create the theme outlook, so to make them according to own taste, these images has to be edited. The image files pretty self-explaining on they fulfill which purpose, for example the logo.png file is used for the logo, the nav.png or navbar.png contains the navigation menu background, the header.jpg is used to construct the header banner for that theme. Editing these files will change the theme outlook too only you have to keep in mind that the replacing images need to be of same dimension and file type, otherwise they will not work and theme will show blank space or error image.

So go on, get a theme and modify to make your first WordPress theme as instructed. Keep reading wordpressdeveloper for more tips, tricks and tutorials on this wonderful content management software. Post comment if you have any query or question and don’t forget to subscribe.

Understand any system requires knowledge on both front end and back end of the system, sites which are run by WordPress always has MySQL, powerful DBMS software as the back bone of its database. Either the script is automatically or manually, it has to be links to any existing database or has be created a new one to use with the WordPress content management system. Every content management system works in the similar way to store up the data input in the site and manages them by arranging the best way possible.

If the WordPress is installed manually, it can be easily seen how the config.php file inside the script loader is changed according to the MySQL database which already exists, there the database name, database host name, user name of the database who has full privilege of read, write and execute in the database has to be entered in the specified field, and if any of these values are wrong, the script will not simply be installed into the site, will give error message about problems in the database. It is very important to use proper database info as the whole content management system depends on that and runs from information of there every time.

WordPress use fields to define how the custom data is inserted into the MySQL and every time we use any post or comment or image, it gets stored in the database there. While posting there are options to insert custom fields into there, actually all posts, images etc. are automatically converted into fields and stored into the database. MySQL is very powerful database management software which is used widely with most of the front end software like Joomla, Drupal etc. as it is very easy to configure and integrate MySQL with any software which uses recognizable separate data for storing and organizing into the DBMS system.

The MySQL can actually be seen in the file hosting site which generally uses cPanel or Vista Panel as the account controller. There is one software called PHPMyAdmin which is the easiest way to see, use or query and MySQL database, after opened the software will generally have drop down list of database on the left panel. Automatically created databases are named with a fixed prefix and database number like wrd_11, wrd_12 etc. which are seen after clicking on them. The database has rows and columns that hold the data, rows are the most important as it defines the name of field and column holds the field data arranged alphabetically. Generally the rows are named as wp_post, wp_comment, wp_image etc. which represents the database for whole set of posts, comments & images respective to the site that the particular database is linked with. One of the advantages of this database is that it can be exported to a pre-arranged excel sheet, pdf or comma separated value format as well as imported for restoring any back up.

There are sometimes the database needs to be changed to optimize the WordPress site, this basic knowledge can help you achieve that easily. Keep reading for more tutorials on WordPress and don’t forget to subscribe.

Permalinks are one of the most important aspects of search engine optimization work, it is the actual name by which the search engines like Google see the site and find objects on the site. Uniform Resource Locator, known as url, is the output of the permalink that any site use to show their products or article to the users, hence managing it correctly brings fruitful result whereas improper permalink often is one of the reasons less number of visitors come into the site.

To understand the permalinks management, we have to follow one simple rule, show the users what is important in your site, and cut out the unimportant part, whether that may be graphics, heavy animation, or permalinks. Since most of the sites have an average visitor length of only a few minutes or even less, importance of the aspects should be decided henceforth.

Generally permalinks are auto generated when we publish any post in the WordPress site, but as a flexible content management software, they can be edited to great extent, making it easier for managing and modifying whenever needed, although it is not advisable to change permalink of a post after Google has cached it since the new permalink can be doubted as duplicate post and be penalized. So working with permalinks should be done with professional integrity and caution.

The default set of permalinks are described as post number after the site’s url, which is not so good in search engine optimization purpose, the permalink should be spontaneous and easily understandable what the topic is from the link. Now the default set which is described in technical language as /%post_id% / looks quite like short url as it can be related to anything, nothing is understood from the link which says http://wordpressdeveloper.com/?p=123. So the permalinks should be self-explanatory and connected to the topic, in which case only the post name is important after site url, like http://wordpressdeveloper.com/how-to-manage-wordpress-permalinks. To achieve this, we have to edit the permalink option from the WordPress Admin Panel which can be found in http://yousite.com/wp-admin/options-permalink.php page. After going there is a list of options to select what slag should the default permanent be. As we discussed the best option is to use only the topic name after the site url, we will use %postname%/ in the Custom Structure feature box and save it to see the changes. The best practice is to change this at the beginning of managing the site, because changing it in the running site will change a whole lot of previous links, resulting in the consequences we discussed earlier.

After setting the obvious defaults, it is also important to tweak the post title to something compact, for tweaking the permalinks to a better search engine optimized one. As for example, if the post title contains number, the permalink should be changed to the word expression of that number, unless there are multiple numbers.

JavaScript are one of the most used languages in the web world that helps in implementing objects, rich content, modules and media into the site effectively with decent level of animation feature. WordPress, as content management software, is pretty robust to integrate JavaScript properly with some limitations due to security.

Generally JavaScript, such as tracking or analysis codes, can easily be added into the WordPress as they require to be inserted in the home page only and most of the themes have predefined place to insert the code or the code can simply be added into the header via the header.php file. The problem occurs while adding any JavaScript in a single particular page or post, as there is no php file separately for each page and post of WordPress that can simply be edited and inserted the JavaScript. While creating or editing any new page or post, html tags are accepted as well as some php syntax but if you use any JavaScript under the html tab of the page or post, it will not be activated in there, neither any effect of that JavaScript will show in the edited page or post.

As we said earlier WordPress have the compatibility to use JavaScript in anywhere, page or post but for security reasons, the JavaScript are blocked and only html or xhtml scripts are allowed to run by a filter predefined in WordPress library. Tracking or analysis codes are inserted to specified php files where filers are not used but normal page or posts have the filters activated. To use JavaScript in any particular page or post, we have to disable the filter so that JavaScript can be used anywhere. Another alternative is to install a plugin like AdSense implementer where JavaScript can be added and used anywhere in the site.

To use disable the filter, you have to use the following codes :

function disable_content_filters() {

global $current_user;

get_currentuserinfo();

These will elevate the blockade on JavaScript by Disabling KSES HTML/XHTML filter of WordPress security, but to prevent any mishaps for the lack of security, another code should be used to prevent any non-elevated user to exploit JavaScript in the site, so after adding the codes above, use these jjust under :

if ($current_user->user_level >= $min_user_level) {

remove_filter(‘content_save_pre’, ‘wp_filter_post_kses’);

remove_filter(‘excerpt_save_pre’, ‘wp_filter_post_kses’);

remove_filter(‘content_filtered_save_pre’, ‘wp_filter_post_kses’);

}

These will ensure proper use of JavaScript keeping the security loop tight, along with disabling the KSES filter to work simultaneously.
